The form of these documents retained the contractualization of the marriage certificate writing that had formed before the Emperor Xianfeng reign. The core idea of “shangli” (a Chinese tradition of highly regarding courtesy) remained unchanged. The format and structure were still based on the layout of “the non-governmental general encyclopedia” (the leishu a genre of reference books historically compiled). Meanwhile, the writing of marriage certificate had been forming a new layout which focused on the pinlidan, gradually reached simplification and clarification.
