This article takes the social actions initiated by “Are you there?” as the object of research and argues that the question “Are you there?” is a construction and metaphor of online spatial orientation, offering an “immersive experience” and a sense of “imaginative physical presence” in virtual media interaction. As the opening remarks of starting a conversation, “Are you there?”, whether it is the initiator's temptation or confirmation of the other party's presence, or the respondent's delayed or positive response, reflects the power dynamics of the two parties in mediated communication under the influence of multiple factors.
