Having been deprived of personal wealth and education opportunities, Burmese Chinese people reluctantly re-migrated as the diaspora. Among them, more than 30,000 migrants relocated to Macao in the 1960s. Macao then, despite the Portuguese administration, was largely influenced by the Chinese Gentry with the help of the PRC. Urged by the latter, Portuguese-administered Macao changed to a modern way of governance and then embraced economic growth and social prosperity. The rising Chinese community in Macao was evidenced by the Portuguese immigration policies with regards to the Burmese Chinese diaspora. Notwithstanding dozens of changes after negotiations, Macao government accepted all the immigration appeals. After their settlement, Burmese Chinese organized associations to seek their political rights. Therefore, through years of participation in social affairs, they gained social status and hence made the migrants community into a public sphere and tourist attraction with features of southeastern Asia. Their adjustments of identity prove the theories of social history and cultural studies.
