The poems in his late years (1880-1907) are particularly autobiographical in nature as they are self-expressive and record social change. Yu Yue's poetry in his late years expresses how age and illness eroded his life and how memories temporarily relieved his inner confusion. Those poems also record his wonder, hesitation, and acceptance when faced with Western material culture and technology. Additionally, his works also preserve his strong desire to make a name for himself when he understood the truth of life and death. Yu Yue did not make it into the series of writers who are included in the literary history of the late Qing dynasty, but his poems in his late years describe his sense of time, his experience of life, his acceptance of Western artefacts and his poetic practice of achieving prestige, all of which demonstrated his hesitant inner state. This mixed state of mind was common among literati in the transitional period.
