Existing scholarship mainly focuses on the studies of background, criteria, development and evidential research of the literary collections. Based on previous scholarship, the complexity of the early compilation of literary collections leads to the discussions on the functions and influences over the literary development of later generations, while the cultural conception of “collection” is to be reevaluated. This paper begins from the overlapping identities of the historians and literati, studies the shift of functions of literary collections and the establishment of literary hierarchy, and provides a new perspective to understand various questions raised during the compilation of literary collections.
